The agent operation failed because the ADMIN $ share on CLUSTER does not exist

Colleagues, help!
I have a working CLUSTER cluster of two nodes. On both nodes is windows server 2012R2. I am trying to install the Data Protection Manager 2012R2 agent to protect my cluster. In doing so, I get the error "The agent operation failed because the ADMIN $ share on CLUSTER does not exist".
I checked this situation and this is what happened:
\\ node01 \ admin $ - available
\\ node02 \ admin $ - available
\\ CLUSTER \ admin $ - not available
How can I open access to the administrative shared folder on the cluster?
Thanks!

Pre and Post Backup Script to Stop/Start VM

Anyone know how to configure DPM to stop a hyper-v guest OS before it is backed up, then start the vm after backup completes?

I have DPM agent installed on hyper-v host and trying to take a VM-level backup of a guest machine. On the hyper-v host, i have a powershell script file C:\scripts\stop-vm.ps1 that has one line "stop-vm -name <vmName>" and another script C:\scripts\start-vm.ps1 that has one line "start-vm -name <vmName>".

I've configured this file on the hyper-v host:

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Scripting\ScriptingConfig.xml"

with the following settings:

My "DataSourceName" is same as what's shown in DPM Console ("RCT\<vmName>"):

But the script doesn't appear to be running because the VM is not shutting down before backups start.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials Backup Fails (Windows Server Storage VSS Writer - The writer's timeout expired between the freeze and thaw events)

$

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased and set up a Windows Server 2016 Essentials machine and want to perform regular backups.  These backups however keep failing.  I'm going to try to include all of the specifics below:

So, it fails at Sytem State and Bare Metal Recovery...

The error for System State and Bare Metal Recovery is: One of the system components is not consistent in the shadow copy created for backup.

The error for all of the others is: The writer's timeout expired between the freeze and thaw events.

This happens every time I try to do a backup...

I am backing up to an external hard drive.  When I start the backup, it advises that the external drive is included in the backup and asks me if I want to omit it (which is fine because that is a backup drive and shouldn't be backed up also).  I choose "Yes" and the backup proceeds.  The following morning though and I have all of these errors and a backup that, presumably, is worthless...

Has anyone seen this error or know how I can fix it going forward?  I backup important data separately, but would like a backup of the actual server too.

I have searched online, and while I've seen some discussion of similar issues, I haven't found an actual solution anywhere.

Thanks again for your help!

DPM Error 152

I have two datacenters and 3 Hyper-V hosts.  I have 1 DPM server in each location.

Workloads are live on Hyper-V 1 in Site 1.

Hyper-V 2 hosts only replicas in Site 1.

Hyper-V 3 hosts tertiary replicas in Site 2.

DPM 1 backs up Exchange/SQL from live workloads.

DPM 2 provides secondary protection for Exchange/SQL in Site 2.

DPM 1 backs up VMs with short retention from Hyper-V 2.

DPM 2 should backup Hyper-V replicas on Hyper-V 3 but when I modify the protection group I get Error 152 like this: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/ceb036f8-27f0-4f93-b1d8-a94d58fb5320/scdpm-2012-r2-dpm-error-id-152-source-cannot-be-added-to-the-protection-group-because-of-existing?forum=dpmsetup

I had no problem creating the protection groups this way and never had to deal with any nonsense about switched protection.  Now, with one update or another this is all busted.  Is DPM incapable of this now and is it simpler to move to Altaro for my VM protection or is there a fix available that I don't have to create a support call to get?

DPM 2016 The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V RCT\********** on ************* is inconsistent with the protected data source.

Hello.

We have next -

DPM Server -

         Windows Server 2012 R2

         Data Protection Manager 2016 UR5

         SQL Server 2012

Hyper-V Server -

         Windows Server 2016

VM -

          Windows Server 2012 R2

and we have next problem -

The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V RCT\********** on ************* is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unknown error (0x80041001) (0x80041001))

I tried next solution -

but it didn't help.

Hyper-V 2012R2 on Storage Spaces CSV, Ways to protect against "snapshot stun" during backups?

$

Upgraded to DPM 2016 this weekend.

I have a client who uses DPM VM and guest level iSCSI connections to 3 QNAP 4 bay NAS units.

Direct backups via the DPM agent into each VM work amazingly well.

Host level DPM backups of entire VM guests as vhdxs has been problematic.

Primary concern: snapshot stun during VHDX backups

Secondary concerns:

Location of checkpoint file same disk as currently running VM

I don't have Pagefiles on separate vhdxs

Is there a more ideal dpm storage layout "best practice" I should consider?

Should I do away with qnaps and install the disks in a real server as local storage?

DPM 2016 - Cluster - Failed to restore virtual machine

Good afternoon.

There is a problem of restoring a virtual machine back to where it was successfully saved from.

There is a cluster of 3 nodes. At all are agents of DPM, backups are normal. But, at attempt of restoration, there is a "failure of restoration".

Recovery tasks for Microsoft Hyper-V are completed. For most jobs or all tasks, the recovery of the requested data failed. (Identifier 3111)

An unexpected error occurred while running the job. Identifier 104, Information: Unknown error (0x80041024) (0x80041024).

Actually, the following happens. DPM famously demolishes the previous virtual machine from the disk, uploads a new one from the backup and actually everything.

When I try to start a virtual snap-in from the cluster, I get an error with an unknown identifier.

The question is how to overcome this mistake? I can not find information on the Internet and on the website of the microsoft. Probably that that with safety. Help, where to dig? The basic functional does not work out in the proper way.

Do PreBackupScript and PostBackupScript still work in DPM 2016 (with modern storage)?

I am trying to run a PreBackupScript and a PostBackupScript for a protected Hyper-V virtual machine.

The vm runs on a Windows Server 2016 failover cluster and runs Windows Server 2016 as the guest OS.

I modified ScriptingConfig.xml to match what I have used before, including using instructions by Mike Jacquet in this forum on how to obtain the DataSourceName for Hyper-V virtual machines.

The virtual machine itself is named TFS2018 and using Mike's instructions I issued this SQL Query:

select ComponentName,caption from tbl_RM_RecoverableObject
order by cast (Caption as nvarchar)

A subset of the results:

ComponentName                                                     caption
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Tfs2018\TFS2018.vhdx   C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Tfs2018\TFS2018.vhdx
A28F5AAC-9D57-4007-AC0A-9B77EACCBF20            TFS2018

I am using A28F5AAC-9D57-4007-AC0A-9B77EACCBF20 as the DataSourceName.

Is that correct?

The recovery point job runs ok, but it looks like the scripts are ignored.

Protection group looks like this:

ScriptingConfig:

Resume protected clustered VM after Migration

Hi,

I was protecting a couple of VMs on cluster1  with DPM.

I recently created a new cluster, cluster2. And moved the VMs from cluster1 to cluster2.

The DPM backups are now failing as DPM is not finding the VMs on cluster1.

How can I resume the backup of the VMs on Cluster2 without DPM creating new replicas?

Thanks,

Hot to migrate VMs from one DPM server to another/new DPM servers

In an HyperV environment , 200+ VMs are being protected on DPM01,  to move some of the Vms to a new DPM02 servers, what are the best ways to move forward.

Can we attach one physical host to two different DPM servers.

Can we move physical hosts binded to DPM01 to DPM02 without making any change on host level.

Shouldwe add DPM01 in DPM 02 and  try to discover VMs on DPM02

Can't restore Entire VM from backup

Hi,

I tried restoring two different jobs and they fail with the following error:

The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error is likely to reoccur.
 (0x800423F4))

I checked the vm before it was backed up and after it was restored (recreateing a new vm using vhdx) and there are no errors in any of the vss writes.

Any help?

DPM 2019 - problem with Hyper-V VM recovery from Azure Cloud Backup.

$

Hello,

We are evaluating Azure Cloud Backup with our DPM 2019 10.19.260.0.

Our DPM server is on a physical Windows Server 2019.

After I created the Vault and did the necessary on the DPM server, I created a protection group for a Hyper-V VM.

The backup to cloud seems to be working ok as no error arised.

Now, when I try to recover that VM, I can see this critical error at then end of Recovery from staging area:

Affected area:RCT\testserver
Occurred since:01/05/2020 10:43:31
Description:The recovery jobs for Microsoft Hyper-V RCT\testserver that started at 01 May 2020 10:22:26, with the destination of host.contoso.ch, have completed. Most or all jobs failed to recover the requested data. (ID 3111)
An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Unknown error (0x80041024) (0x80041024))
More information
Recommended action:Retry the operation.
On the Jobs tab in the Monitoring tasks area, group jobs by type to view details of the recovery jobs.
Retry the recovery job...
Resolution:DPM automatically changes this alert's status to inactive 10 days after it is issued. To dismiss the alert, click below
Inactivate

Now, if I tred to import the VM in Hyper-V with the downloaded data, it seems to be ok BUT the problems are:

- Why does it raise a critical alert ? I can't validate the project for a production if critical alerts are there.
- Even if that VM could be recovered, I can't trust something to be a 1:1 correct recovery if errors come with the recovery.

Can someone help us with that please ? Thanks in advance.

Multiple DPM servers backing up HyperV VMs

Hi,

I cannot find any info but I think I know the answer to this but need it confirmed.

Is it possible to have multiple DPM servers backing up VMs in a Hyper-V cluster (with using SCVMM).

The reason I ask is that we have a potential for certain VMs to be backed up by different DPM servers (servers owned by different departments)

Kind regards

VM does not backup

$

HI all,

I am at my wits end here.  I have tried loads of different suggestions but nothing seems to work.

I have a test environment and am trying to backup a single VM of about 20Gb.  I have a 100Gb volume on which to store the replica.  There is nothing else being backed up by this DPM server and there are no protection groups.

When I create the first and only protection group I am able to successfully add the VM to the protection group.  After the protection group has been created it attempts to perform initial replication at which point this fails saying there is insufficient disk space.

If I perform a consistency check then it may fail but if I retry consistency checks eventually it succeeds.

I do notice that when I go to add the VM I get the following details (see screenshot).  As you can see it has not determined how much space to use so not sure if this is an issue or not.

Has anyone got any idea on what on earth is going on with my DPM server?

Kind regards

HOsts not reflecting correct VMs

DPM 2019 on Server 2019 Standard.

I removed all the Vms on Host A that were being backed up and made them inactive.

Added new VMs to Host A. Went to modify the groups but the Host still hosts the old VMs and not the new Vms.

What's the deal? How do I make the host in DPM reflect the current VMs  living in the environment?

Thanks!

2. How can I configure one Time backup? I know in veritas, we can take one time backup. Is it also possible in DPM?

3. How can I clear MS SQL DB logs by taking its full backup?

DPM 2012 R2 - Physical Server

I am trying to restore a VM to a prior date and I get this error when selecting restore to original location

DPM was unable to access the cluster resource group ServerName.ClusterName.Domain for Online\ServerName of protection group Hyper-V Guests. Recover the datasource using the alternate location workflow. (ID: 32579)

Has anyone come across this issue before and what did you do to fix it? Thanks.

How to recover Hyper V vm

I have a Hyper V node which is part of cluster but also some VMs are as stand alone. So I had push agent on Hyper v node and started backup of VMs. Backups are successful. But when I go to restore the VM, It shows me that I can recover only VHDX files. It shows me two VHDX files which are C: and D: Also it is allowing me to restore VHDx as file over copy to a network.

how can I restore whole VM instead of storing VHDX files one by one.?
